Philanthropy

Throughout the years, Sigma Delt has been involved in a variety of philanthropic activities, both on campus and in the Upper Valley area. Every term, Sigma Delt selects a charity to support as a house that is based on the interests of our sisters. Sisters can also participate in other philanthropy events through the house; some regular events that we are involved in include the termly Blood Drives, Relay for Life, Special Olympics, and Students Fighting Hunger, among others.

Charity Selected for 2013 Summer: The Prouty for Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center

Over the Summer, our sisterhood supported the Prouty. The Prouty is a campus-wide effort to raise money for cancer research at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Norris Cotton Cancer Center in New Hampshire. Norris Cotton Cancer Center is the only comprehensive cancer center in northern New England. Participants run, walk, bike, or even golf in an effort to raise money for cancer research. Every Sigma Delt sister participated in, volunteered for, or helped out in some way for the Prouty. We also sold Sports Bras to support the Prouty, and donated all the profits to Sigma Delt’s Prouty team. As a team, we raised over $8,000!

Charity Selected for 2013 Spring: VOICE 4 Girls

In the spring, our house elected to support VOICE 4 Girls, an NGO co-founded by Sigma Delt alumna Averil Spencer ’10. VOICE 4 Girls aims at improving the livelihood opportunities for girls from low-income communities by addressing common challenges girls face with regards to education and employment. Only in its second year of operation, VOICE focuses its efforts on a 4-week summer camp for girls run throughout Hyderabad, India that provides training in communicative English and gender empowerment. Ultimately, the organization aspires to spread the camp curriculum to other countries in which young females face similar obstacles. In an effort to spread awareness about the issues addressed by VOICE and raise money for the cause, Sigma Delt co-sponsored an evening of dinner and dancing, with food catered by Jewel of India and performances by Vandana and the Rockapellas. Through this effort as well as other smaller fundraisers, our house was able to make a meaningful contribution to the VOICE organization as well as the Dartmouth campus dialogue.
